We are delighted to congratulate SVA International and all those involved, on their outstanding achievement in winning the Best Project: Architecture Category at the prestigious SAISC Steel Awards 2024 for their exceptional work on the New Science Centre at Nelson Mandela University. The Centre also won the Best Overall Award, in the annual South African Property Owner’s Association (SAPOA) Awards 2024, held in early September.
The New Science Centre incorporates a 140-seater planetarium which is the main focal element, as well as lecture venues, exhibition areas and auxiliary spaces. Safintra’s NEWLOK™, specified for both wall cladding and roofing, is a versatile product with wide pans which provide a particularly pleasing finish in this innovative space.
Architect’s Perspective
“In choosing materials for this project, we were guided by the contemporary aesthetic of the design and the practical challenges posed by its coastal location and high public traffic. The clean lines and precise geometry of NEWLOK™ enhanced the overall design, creating a perfect foil for the iconic planetarium Dome. And, of course, still meeting the functional imperatives of durability and low maintenance.”
- Tony Danev, Lead Architect
A Proud Partnership
“We are incredibly proud to have played a part in this iconic project, providing roofing and cladding that not only complemented the vision of the architects but also offered the strength and longevity required in the demanding Gqeberha environment. The New Science Centre is a beacon of innovation, and we are honoured that NEWLOK™ was chosen for such a prestigious building.”
